CODE COMPLIANCE

SBC 601 Fenestration Compliance: A Practical Engineer's Guide

The Saudi Building Code (SBC 601) sets strict energy performance requirements for windows and doors. This lecture walks through the prescriptive path, the trade-off method, and how to read the envelope compliance tables.

SBC 601 Fenestration Compliance: A Practical Engineer's Guide

Saudi Building Code Chapter 601 — Energy Conservation in Buildings — is the primary regulatory framework governing the thermal performance of building envelopes in the Kingdom. For architects and engineers, understanding how to achieve compliance efficiently — without over-specifying expensive glazing — is a critical commercial and technical skill. There are two primary compliance pathways: the Prescriptive Method and the Performance Method (energy simulation).

The Prescriptive Method: Envelope Trade-Off

Window-to-Wall Ratio and Maximum SHGC

SBC 601 divides Saudi Arabia into climate zones (Climate Zone 1 through 3, with Zone 1 being the hottest desert interior). For each zone, the code prescribes maximum allowable U-values and SHGC values for fenestration based on the building's Window-to-Wall Ratio (WWR). A commercial building in Riyadh (Zone 1) with a WWR of 40% must typically achieve a whole-window U-value ≤ 2.0 W/m²·K and SHGC ≤ 0.25. Exceeding the WWR limit triggers stricter performance thresholds.

Documentation and Product Certification

To demonstrate SBC 601 compliance, engineers must provide certified window energy performance data. Acceptable certification bodies include NFRC (North American Fenestration Rating Council) and equivalent CE-marked European test reports complying with EN ISO 10077. Prestige systems are supplied with full certified performance test reports covering U-value (whole window), SHGC, Air Permeability, and Water Tightness ratings — ensuring a straightforward compliance documentation process for Saudi authorities.
